Stat Pack: 2024 Cup Series South Point 400 Preview
Hamlin is the pick.
@ Las Vegas Motor Speedway (1.5 mi)
Entry list notes: Jimmie Johnson is in the Trackhouse #84. It won't matter.
Picks
In nine intermediate races this season, there's only been one repeat winner: Kyle Larson, who dominated and won the spring race at Las Vegas. Denny Hamlin notably does not have a win despite having the best average running position (weighted or standard), best average finish, best adjusted average speed (cPOMS), and best net rating (GR-LR) on intermediates. He, not Larson, is my pick to win.
Tyler Reddick finished second in the spring race; on mile-and-a-halfs, he rates third this season in average running position and GR-LR, and fourth in average finish. Ty Gibbs, Ryan Blaney, Chase Elliott, and Ross Chastain also flash in the top four or five of various metrics, and given the way races like the spring Las Vegas race have gone, if they get out front they may never relinquish the lead. But, if it comes down to quality, I'm taking a Hamlin day.
