Ross Chastain worked his way up front after a series of cautions. He restarted up front with twenty laps to go, and a charging William Byron could not get close enough to pass.

Chastain finished with the best GR-LR in the race and second-best weighted average running position (due to his late-race positioning), but only the eighth-best cPOMS, which indicates adjusted average speed, and sixth-best average running position. Byron led in all of the aforementioned stats except GR-LR, where he was second.

This is Chastain's first win of the year. He leads the Cup series in success rate and has the third-best average finish across all track types, but hadn't been great on intermediates coming into Kansas. Entering the race, Chastain had the 16th-best intermediate track success rate (63%) and an average finish of 15.5 on 1.5 mi-classified tracks.

Full Recap

Ross Chastain won the Hollywood Casino 400 at Kansas Speedway after starting 20th and leading 52 laps. Chastain passed Martin Truex Jr. for the lead with 13 laps to go and held on to win by just 0.388 seconds over William Byron. This was Chastain's fifth career Cup Series win and his first win of the 2024 season.

The race was slowed by 10 cautions, including one on the first lap that involved four drivers: Josh Berry, Ty Dillon, Harrison Burton and Jimmie Johnson. All four drivers were involved in a wreck on the backstretch. Chase Elliott, who had to start the race from the rear because of an engine change, also made contact with the wall during that caution.

The race had 30 lead changes among 15 different drivers. Christopher Bell led the most laps with 122, but finished seventh after hitting the wall late in the race while battling for the lead.

Byron, who finished second, remained in the lead of the points standings. He won the first stage of the race and finished second in the second stage. He also had the best Average Running Position (ARP) of the race, 4.00.

Ty Gibbs finished fifth, starting on the front row alongside pole-sitter Christopher Bell. Gibbs led five laps during the race, first taking the lead on lap 7 after a caution for an accident involving Kyle Larson.

Denny Hamlin finished eighth.
